A simple decision test#
- Do you have a measurable specification, drawings or a reference product?
- Does your advantage depend on a feature the factory has not already built?
- Is speed to a tested market sample more important than maximum design control?
- Can your team approve tooling, compliance and production samples?
If the first two answers are yes, investigate OEM. If speed and development capacity are the constraints, investigate ODM. A hybrid path is also possible: start from an ODM platform, then fund OEM-level changes after market validation.
What both models have in common#
Neither acronym replaces a product requirement document, a sample approval process or a quality plan. Both models must address voltage, plug, labeling, certification, packaging, spare parts, warranty responsibility, inspection and shipping terms.
